Viewing History through Music 9:00 - 10:25 am
Instructor: Mr. Timothy Wilds
Tuition: $320
Material fee: $40
Thinkers and philosophers have always used music as a vehicle for transmitting views on the meaning of life, God and the world. They understand how immensely powerful music is. Institutions—monarchies, governments, totalitarian states, religions--have sponsored musical creativity to insure that their message gets to the people. Every composition reflects the events and the spirit of the age in which it was created. Studying how music does this can help one understand the ebb and flow of human history. Although this class will largely focus on the music of Western civilization, we will on occasion, delve into non-Western music. These musical traditions from outside Europe and the Americas are equally intriguing and complex and an acquaintance with them will engender respect.
